They Shall Have No Fear, Nor Shall They Grieve- Gems from Surah Yunus

PaperArtist_2013-06-17_22-10-09Allah tells us that His Awliya are those who believe and have Taqwa of Allah as He defined them. Every pious, God-fearing person is a friend of Allah.

Unquestionably, for the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. (They are those) who believed and were fearing Allah. For them are good tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter. No change is there in the words of Allah . That is what is the great attainment. (Surah Yunus 62-64)

Ibn Jarir recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah sallalahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

((Among the servants of Allah there will be those whom the Prophets and martyrs will consider fortunate.))

The word used here is  yaghbitoon (يغبطون) which is derived from the word ghibtah (غبط). Ghibtah is a positive kind of jealousy; which causes a person to desire the same bounty and blessing he sees in another person while feeling happy for the fortune that he has, without any negative feelings of envy (حسد) and hatred (بغض). Basically, he doesn’t wish for the blessing to be taken away from the other person, but he wishes he had the same. An example of that would be for one to feel jealous of a pious person who observes the night prayer and has a strong connection with the Quran; he sees him worshipping with zeal and vigor and he wishes he had that for himself.

But why would the Prophets and martyrs be jealous? Weren’t the Prophets forgiven for their past and future sins? Weren’t they the best of Allah’s servants? Weren’t they the ones promised the highest levels of Jannah? Aren’t the martyrs forgiven with the first drop of blood that is spilt? Won’t they be given the most precious dwellings in Jannah, and crowns of dignity placed on their heads? What do these servants of Allah have that the most pious of people will envy?!

The people asked, “Who are these people, O Messenger of Allah, so we may love them?” He said:

((These are people who loved one another for the sake of Allah without any worldly gain like money or kinship. Their faces will be light upon platforms of light. They shall have no fear when the people shall fear, nor shall they grieve when the people will grieve.))

Then he sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam recited,

Unquestionably, for the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

In the life of this world, our condition is changeable and transitory. We fear for the future, and we grieve over the past. We waver between anxiety  over what is yet to happen and regret over what has already happened. We’re constantly battling with ourselves, and cannot even guarantee the next breath. However, Allah guarantees ultimate happiness and ease for those who believed, and lived consciously; always measuring their every action against the yardstick of their faith; always hoping for reward and fearing punishment. These people will never fear for their future because they had sent forth good deeds, and they shall never grieve over the past life because they valued every moment and spent it to purchase Allah’s greatest favor: Jannah; the vastness of which is as wide as the heavens and earth.
