Chapter on the Appearance of White Hair on Rasulallah

Qatadah said: I asked Anas ibn Malik: Did Rasulallah (sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa salam) dye his hair? He said: He did not reach the stage where one would dye his hair, however, he did have a few white hair on his temples; while Abu Bakr radhiallahu ‘anh dyed his hair with Hinna’ and Katm.

(Hadith Saheeh)

Benefits from the hadith:

1- Katm and Hinna’ are plants that are used to produce dyes. Hinna’ produces a red dye, while katm produces a reddish-black dye.

2- Rasullalah (sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa salam) would encourage the dyeing of white and grey hair.

3- It is not permitted to dye hair black, it is narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah that Abu Quhafah (Abu Bakr’s father) was brought to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa salam) to  pledge his oath of allegiance, and his hair was completely white. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa salam) said, “Change this (i.e. the color of his hair), but avoid black.” (Saheeh Muslim) Rasulallah (sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa salam) also said, “There will be people at the end of time who will dye their hair black like the crops of pigeons; they will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise.” (Abu Dawood)

‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas radhiAllahu ‘anhu used to say: I could not look him in the eye because of awe. If I were to be asked to describe him I would not be able to, because I could not look him in the eye. (Saheeh Muslim)

بأبي أنت و أمي يا رسول الله.. صلى الله عليه و على آله و صحبه و سلم

May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alahi wa salam)
